Tesla also declared last year that it is “globally migrating to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry” for “standard range vehicles.” Tesla has already switched to LFP cells in its China-made Model 3 and Model Y. It also frees up battery cell manufacture for other, more energy-dense chemistries, allowing for the development of additional long-range automobiles. However, they have recently advanced to the point where cobalt-free batteries can now be used in lower-end and shorter-range vehicles. Iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which do not include nickel or cobalt, are traditionally less expensive and safer, but they have a lower energy density, making electric vehicles less efficient and having a shorter range. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated several times in recent years that the company intends to switch more electric cars to LFP batteries in order to address nickel and cobalt supply difficulties. The present extraction methods for obtaining cobalt have raised ethical concerns.The demand for electric vehicles has never been higher, but the difficulty and cost of collecting cobalt, along with controversies over mining practices, has led many electric vehicle makers to envision a future in which cobalt is completely removed from rechargeable batteries. While the material has gained popularity as a result of its impact on battery life and longevity, it simply cannot be harvested at rates that can keep up with the present demand for EVS. The rising demand for electric vehicles greatly outstrips the rate of cobalt extraction.
